Secretariat is one of the greatest racehorses to ever live. While he is not undefeated, he set track records in the Triple Crown races that still stand today. And in 1973, as he finished the Belmont Stakes 31 lengths in the lead, he was forever immortalized as a super horse with the heart of a champion. After passing away from Laminitis, a disease where the hoof wall begins to separate from the coffin bone in the horse’s foot, his autopsy revealed his heart was more than 2 times the size of an average Thoroughbred’s.
Secretariat is very well muscled, having a thicker neck and larger croup than many of the other Triple Crown winners. He has thin legs that look very straight. His back and loin are short which is favorable. His heart-girth is extremely deep, allowing for plenty of room for his expanding lungs and incredibly large heart.
