Citation was the 1948 Triple Crown winner. He was much more popular considering he raced through the age of 6. He ran in a field of 6 for the Derby, 4 for the Preakness and 8 for the Belmont. His sire was not a distance runner, but for Citation this apparently did not matter.
Citation is also successful conformationally. His hocks appear to tip in slightly, while also giving the allusion of being sickle hocked, meaning his rear cannons are not perpendicular to the ground. His throatlatch is refined and his ribs look "well sprung" to allow for an increased oxygen inhalation.
