Eight Belles was going to be a very successful filly. She took first in four of seven starts. In the 2008 Kentucky Derby she finished second behind Big Brown. Tragically, after crossing under the wire, she fractured both front fetlock joints and collapsed onto the track. Considering the breaks were in two separate legs, she was humanly euthanized on the track, ending her career just yards away from a glorious second place finish in the biggest race in America.
Eight Belles is another small lean filly. Her body is thin to match her proportionally thin legs. Her cannons are short with a laid back shoulder and a narrow throatlatch. Any fault seen in this picture could be a slightly longer back, decreasing her ability to collect, but this should not affect her front legs, not explaining her breakdown.
