Black Onyx was going to run in the 2013 Derby, but was scratched before running. Before the race a bone chip was discovered in his left ankle. Swelling of the joint indicated how dangerous racing him on the injured leg could be. He has not raced since, but he has not yet been retired.
Black Onyx is very tall and thin. In this photo, you can see how far his scapula is laid back allowing for a great stride length. His rear cannons are long, setting his hocks just slightly above his knees. His ribs do not appear to be sprung very much, but his thin neck and throatlatch should allow for a good inhalation of oxygen.
